Cary Diwali

When: Sat., Oct. 10, 10 a.m. 2015
Price: free (lawn), $20 (reserved)

For all the sniping about Cary's status as peak suburbia, the town also boasts a wonderful array of cultural offerings. (In these parts, where else can you find Tibetan, Mexican, Indian and Japanese food in a single shopping center?) For the past decade and a half, the Town of Cary and Hum Sub have co-presented Cary Diwali, a single-day affair celebrating Diwali, the five-day Hindu festival of lights that coincides with the Hindu New Year. Early in the day, you can catch dance performances and explore a bazaar of art and food. Later, singers Kavita Krishnamurti and Shurjo Bhattacharya perform with violinist Ambi Subramaniam before the festivities conclude with an 8:30 p.m. fireworks display. With free admission and a varied slate of offerings, Cary Diwali serves as a fantastic learning opportunity for the curious as well as a delightful community celebration of Indian heritage and history in the Triangle. 11 a.m., free, 8003 Regency Parkway, Cary, 919-462-2025, —Allison Hussey
