Carolina RailHawks vs. Vancouver Whitecaps

When: Sun., March 4, 3 p.m. 2012
Price: $10-$25

Last fall, Martin Rennie, the young coach who made a name for himself over three successful seasons coaching the Carolina RailHawks, finally punched his ticket to the country's top division, Major League Soccer. The Vancouver Whitecaps, enduring a horrendous first season in the league, persuaded the Scotsman to pull up stakes and move to British Columbia.

Unfortunately for local fans, however, Rennie also took the heart of the RailHawks lineup with him. The bright side is that RailHawks president Curt Johnson recruited a formidable new coach in Colin Clarke. In the last three years, Clarke's Puerto Rico Islanders generally got the best of Rennie's RailHawks, and fans will hope the trend continues when the Whitecaps visit Cary in this exhibition. However, expectations should be tempered by the fact that Clarke is still looking for players and his team will have trained for just two weeks. All the same, professional soccer is back today at 3 p.m. —David Fellerath
