Sergei Prokofiev's ballet based on Shakespeare's famous play had a rough entry into the world. First, the Bolshoi Ballet, who commissioned the work, rejected the happy ending the composer had tacked on. So he restored the tragic finale, only to find the music of his second try deemed "undanceable." Many choreographers and directors in the roughly 80 years since have disagreed, turning Romeo and Juliet into a pillar of popular ballet. One of them is Carolina Ballet director Robert Weiss, who made his own choreography for a production that debuted in 1999. Now it returns to Fletcher Opera Theater, replete with humor, romance and drama, from lively street scenes and daring sword fights to a poignant balcony-bound pas de deux. The production promises lavish costumes and powerful lighting, which Weiss' appealing recent production of Vivaldi's Four Seasons proves is well within this company's reach. —Brian Howe
