CANNIBAL CORPSE, CATTLE DECAPITATION

MOTORCO, DURHAM | FRIDAY, OCT. 9

In recent months, Durham's underutilized Motorco has taken a surprising turn for the heavy. First, there was Kylesa, followed in short order by a packed seven-band bill led by death metal brutes Origin and Krisiun. And now the mid-size room presents a dense, no-nonsense triumvirate of death metal squads that are, at times, highly technical and highly emblematic of the form itself. With their love of the profane and vile, the long-running legends of Cannibal Corpse have wrestled with free speech issues, legacy control and the weight of their own influence during the last quarter-century. Last year's A Skeletal Domain did little more than reaffirm their past with renewed energy—not so bad, of course, for a band with little left to prove. But the new The Anthropocene Extinction, from California's Cattle Decapitation, is one of the year's best metal surprises. The political grindcore dudes temper their spasticity with some death metal structure and, no kidding, some fetching melodic breaks. They've learned that sometimes the best way to be more aggressive at large is to step back for an instant. Sweden's snarling Soreption, whose stuff can make acrobatic turns, opens. 7:30 p.m., $22$25, 723 Rigsbee Ave., Durham, 919-901-0875, www.motorcomusic.com. —Grayson Haver Currin
