Cankerworms are more commonly recognized as the small green caterpillars that dangle from trees each spring. These caterpillars feed on the newly emerging leaves of trees, which can weaken trees and make them more susceptible to other stresses, such as age, drought, other insects and disease. In order to prevent this problem in the spring, community members must take action in the fall, primarily by controlling the cankerworm population through tree banding. Teach Across Durham will provide more information about cankerworms and the steps needed to protect Durham’s trees from these pests.
