CANCELED: Brandon Flowers

When: Fri., Aug. 14, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $25
While “Mr. Brightside” was one of the most potent pop singles of the ’00s, the strength of The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers didn’t come from his bellowing ability. Instead, his tense description of lost love resonated because of how his voice wavered even when he was half-singing, half-talking through the mania. His second solo album, this year’s The Desired Effect, turns this into a real asset. “Can’t Deny My Love” sports sweeping synths that recall Latin freestyle, another pop subgenre where emotion frequently trumps vocal prowess. The album-closing ballad “The Way It’s Always Been” places Flowers’ shaky voice in a field of power-pop bliss. He’s been acting out his grandiose ambitions for a decade-plus now, but Flowers’ plainspoken charisma, which marks low-key tracks like the Effect’s “Between Me And You,” remains his best weapon. —Maura Johnston
