Cameron Stenger, Matthew Frantz, Exit Interview, Jonas Nicholson

When: Fri., June 19, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $5
Following the frigid separation anxiety of 2003’s Transatlanticism, Death Cab for Cutie tried something softer and warmer on 2005’s Plans. It didn’t always work, as deeply depressed lyrics landed at odds with sepia-toned pop. Carnival, the new album from Chapel Hill’s Cameron Stenger, finds the balance that record couldn’t. A tinge of hope shades the singer’s sedate croon, as guitars billow, hazy and bright. —Jordan Lawrence
