Butterfield 8

When: Fri., March 23, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $5 ($3.50 for members)

My saintly grandparents always maintained a high opinion of the late Elizabeth Taylor because she filmed Raintree County, with Montgomery Clift, in their town of Danville, Ky. Anyway, Grandpa, who never swears or says anything salty, recalled seeing Taylor in Butterfield 8, in particular a scene where she walks toward the camera in a very low-cut dress. "I thought, 'I better keep my mouth closed!,'" he says.

The role of Gloria Wandrous proved to be one of Taylor's most acclaimed. She plays a woman involved in a series of one-night stands—one of which, with a married man (Laurence Harvey)—threatens to become more serious.

Though Taylor won an Oscar for the film, she hated it; she felt it unfairly cashed in on her tabloid reputation as a homewrecker with Eddie Fisher (who also appears in the film). Informed of the film's success, Taylor's response was, "I still say it stinks."

Decide for yourself at this screening, which starts at 8 p.m.; tickets are $5, $3.50 for members of the museum, Cinema Inc. or Galaxy Cinema. Indy contributor Laura Boyes curates this series. —Zack Smith
