Re: “The Morning Roundup: Expanded Early Voting Hours Begin Today and More Clown News

Screw Wegman's. I'd happily settle for a Teeter anywhere east of Duke St.

Re: “The INDY’s Endorsements for the N.C. General Assembly

You rightly identify Mr. Doucette as someone whom we should all hope would help steer the NCGOP in a less crazy direction. I would heartily support him to be chair of the NCGOP.

But the Senate is a numbers game, and besides that--Woodard isn't just a Democrat, he's a damn good one.

Bold choice, Indy. Stupid, but bold.

Re: “Metered Parking Is (Probably) Coming to Downtown Durham This Fall

3 visits per week of 1-2 hrs @ $1.50/hr * 4 weeks/month = 3 x 1.5 x 2 x 4 = $36/month on top of a $50 membership, which is a 72% increase.

That's an odd working definition of "not impacted".

Re: “Metered Parking Is (Probably) Coming to Downtown Durham This Fall

I'm generally in favor of charging for parking downtown. Manage demand, capture some revenue, offset some costs.

My #1 concern is the impact on the downtown YMCA. There isn't enough parking in its own lot to accommodate demand, even during off-peak hours but especially between 5-7 pm, which would fall under meter time. (I don't even try parking in it myself, and just find a spot on the street.)

Parking in the Durham Center lot is officially forbidden but seems (for the moment) tolerated in practice after 5pm. However if the property owners decide to get serious about that (which seems likely if more people start using it to duck the meters) there is going to be a crunch. A lot of people use the Y (rather than other gyms) for budgetary reasons, and if you tack on $1.50-3.00 per visit that changes things rather dramatically. Not everyone lives within walking distance or has flexibility in their schedule.

Not to mention the potential impact on participation in youth programs, etc.

Re: “Justin Timberlake is very popular, but has he ever done anything of substance?

@David: the people who are prime age for absorbing pop music (i.e., much younger than me, and I assume, you as well) will absolutely remember Taylor and Justin in 50 years. And they will "remember" the Beatles in more or less the same terms I remember Glenn Miller.

Re: “Durham Ponders Possible Pot Enforcement Priorities with Push From FADE

If DPD gave the same amount of attention to simple possession as it does to stop sign, crosswalk, and school zone violations, that'd be about right.

Re: “Charges Dropped in Controversial Durham Marijuana Bust; One Arresting Officer No Longer with DPD

You don't have to weigh the harms of legal MJ (or any other drug) against a standard of no harm. You just have to weigh them against the harms of drug war, which are manifold.

Further, you don't have to support legalization of MJ (though I do, personally) to consider the routine use of military tactics and overwhelming force to serve drug warrants a bad thing.
