BULL CITY DIGNITY PROJECT

HAYTI HERITAGE CENTER, DURHAM

THURSDAY, AUG. 13–FRIDAY, AUG. 14

THE PINHOOK, DURHAM | SATURDAY, AUG. 15

Twelve students from several Durham schools spent the summer listening to more than 20 Durham locals, young and old, tell their stories. Their interviews on gentrification, faith, civil rights and more become material for this documentary theater project at the Hayti Heritage Center and the Pinhook. Elders including church clerk Sue Jarmon, car salesman Michael Peaks and former mayor Wense Grabarek remember Geer Street before Cocoa Cinnamon. They knew an American Tobacco Campus that manufactured cigarettes in Hayti before the Durham Freeway erased a significant part of the neighborhood. "What happens when you have a lot of new people moving in is that people try to make Durham their own in different ways," says co-director Kari Barclay. "Everyone has a stake in claiming it for themselves, but often those claims don't work together." The students come from The School for Creative Studies, Durham School of the Arts and Hillside and Jordan High School. 7:30 p.m. Thurs.–Fri.; 6 p.m. Sat., pay what you want, www.bullcitydignity.com.
