Since the days of Jelly Roll Morton, who put the "Spanish tinge" of Cuban rhythm into jazz, America's passion for Cuban music has been an ember that's burned high and hot once every decade or so. Buena Vista Social Club was an unassuming project in 1996, when American roots guitarist Ry Cooder and Cuban tres guitarist Juan de Marcos first roped together an impromptu band of retirees. But the ensemble hit that ember like lighter fluid. Buena Vista's musical veterans from a forgotten era sparked a global renaissance for Cuban music, spawning nearly two decades of essential recordings, spin-offs and world tours. Adding urgency to this year's "Adios Farewell Tour," at least a half dozen of its original members have already died. This Orquesta puts young blood behind Buena Vista's remaining stars, including cowboy chanteur Eliades Ochoa, lute magus Barbarito Torres, sentimental diva Omara Portuondo, tasty trumpeter Manuel "Guajiro" Mirabal and powerful trombonist Jesus "Aguaje" Ramos. With Cuban and U.S. diplomatic relations set to blossom, what better time to celebrate our close embrace with Cuba's music? Final tour or not, this won't be our last dance. 7 p.m., $57–$94, 123 Vivian St., Durham, 919-684-4444, www.dukeperformances.duke.edu. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
