Buckwheat Zydeco

When: Thu., Oct. 3, 8:30 p.m. 2013

Stanley Dural Jr., aka Buckwheat Zydeco, is the Chuck Berry of zydeco. He's a colorful performer whose indomitable flair injects R&B spirit into traditional American roots music. The loose-fitting Berry comparison mostly reflects the music's lively party vibe and Dural's ability to add a contemporary twist. Dural headed a funk band before zydeco godfather Clifton Chenier took him under his wing in the mid-'70s. Like an aging shortstop, Dural compensates for a loss of technical range with a keen understanding of the music's grooves. His albums mostly move to a playful bounce, though he also cranks out a mean version of Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks." —Chris Parker
