Brooklyn Rider

When: Sat., March 28, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $10-$25
String quartet Brooklyn Rider returns to Chapel Hill to play works from their new album, Brooklyn Rider Almanac. The group commissioned a diverse group of musical friends—Bill Frisell, Glenn Kotche, Ethan Iverson (The Bad Plus), Vijay Iyer, Greg Saunier (Deerhoof)—to write works based on their favorite artists. The results are wonderfully varied: Iyer dissects James Brown’s slithering grooves, Iverson ponders Mark Morris’ ever-musical choreography, and Saunier channels Christian Wolff’s prickly experimentalism. They’ll also offer the world premiere of a newly commissioned piece by Pulitzer Prize winner John Luther Adams, Untouched. —Dan Ruccia
