Broken Water, Brainbows

When: Wed., April 13, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: Free

Broken Water of Olympia, Wash., play like a '90s primer, countering lazy-hazy dream pop—all detached vocal coos and dense wall-of-guitar fuzz—with grunge riffs. Other contemporary bands have taken a similar approach to noise-blanketed indie rock, most notably A Place to Bury Strangers. The difference is that Broken Water is eager to throw its head out from under the sheets of guitar fog to unfurl a declarative hook, as they do three minutes into "Boyfriend Hole." Durham's Brainbows ditch the gauzy textures, favoring a punchy garage rock informed by crisp, insistent post-punk. The free show starts at 9 p.m. —Bryan Reed
