Chicago’s formidable ’90s post-rock scene isn’t a hot influence these days. It was pretty insular in its time, too, rife with side-projects and hot cross-member collaborative action. Tortoise guitarist Douglas McCombs has been at his own tasteful meanderings longer than most, recording throughout the ’00s as the only constant in Brokeback. On 2013’s Brokeback and the Black Rock, the band ditched more avant influences for a record of slow, yearning rock guitar. The headier stuff went missing. The band also misses the vocals of late contributor Mary Hansen (of Stereolab), but don’t we all? —Jeff Klingman
