Brice Randall Bickford, Sara Morris, Laurie Desch

When: Wed., June 27, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: Free

After a brief sojourn to Washington, D.C., Brice Randall Bickford recently relocated to North Carolina, bringing back one of the most distinctive croons and sharpest pens the area has heard in some time. Bickford recorded several strong albums under the name The Strugglers, pairing country grace to chamber pop lavishness on slow, stoic creepers. Last year, however, he abandoned that handle, choosing instead to go by his full name and avoiding the ostensible curse of prescient nomenclature. His eponymous debut, released last summer by Trekky Records, returned with new confidence and gleam, showcased by "Working Woman/ Lazy Demons." The rare piano romp performed with restraint, that song found Bickford bending his arrangements more, giving his fascinating voice stronger textures for better support. Sara Morris, who used to perform with David Karsten Daniels and solo as The Humboldt Sea, returns to the stage in the middle slot on the bill. Laurie Desch opens. The free show starts at 8 p.m. —Grayson Currin
