Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band

When: Sat., Jan. 20, 8 p.m. 2018

Brian Blade may be best known for his eighteen years in the drummer's chair for Wayne Shorter's ever-magnificent quartet, but his own Fellowship Band is equally impressive. The core of the group—pianist Jon Cowhert, bassist Chris Thomas, and saxophonists Melvin Butler and Myron Walden—have been playing together since the late nineties, and it shows. The notion of fellowship is central to everything they do, both in a spiritual and communal sense. Their music is deeply (and often abstractly) rooted in the church music and gospel sounds of Blade's native New Orleans, but you can also hear the influence of Shorter's expansive, peripatetic approach to composition and soloing. The playing is focused, direct, and intuitive, anchored by Blade's fleet drumming and Cowhert's ringing piano chord voicings. And when they all get going, their communication is so free-flowing, it's easy to see how they might make the audience part of their community. —Dan Ruccia
