Brand New Life, Diali Cissokho

When: Fri., June 17, 10 p.m. 2011
Price: $5

Greensboro seven-piece Brand New Life stirs up an intoxicating, jammy blend of New Orleans brass, bold grooves, Afrobeat rhythms and improvised free-jazz solos. The band's joyful, celebratory shows are like a globally aware dance party, with Senegalese talking drummer Mamadou Mbengue adding an unexpected international authenticity. While the headliners offer modern, worldly fusion, Senegalese kora player Diali Cissokho is closely tied to the griot traditions of West Africa; don't be surprised, however, to see the frequent collaborators sharing the stage tonight. —Spencer Griffith
