Braids, Tasseomancy

When: Sat., Oct. 17, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $12
On their 2011 debut, Montreal’s Braids projected anxiety kept internal. Urgency embedded in their ambling music made it sound like a band wanting to roar, but holding themselves in check instead. The follow-up, Flourish // Perish, dropped the temperature, recalling the digital vistas of Warp Records more than Animal Collective’s indie-tropicalia. This year’s Deep in the Iris finds the most sophisticated balance yet between electronic and organic. Through the changes, singer Raphaelle Standell-Preston—so gentle her bursts of blunt lyricism remain surprising—has been Braids’ most compelling component. —Jeff Klingman
