Director Richard Linklater's remarkable experiment—to make a feature over the course of 12 years so that the cast ages in real time—has resulted in one of the most engaging, fascinating films ever. Ellar Coltrane stars as Mason, who begins the film as a typical 6-year-old kid and ends it as a teenager. His parents, played by Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke, have split up. Linklater's daughter Lorelei rounds out the family as Mason's older sister. Every ten minutes or so, the timeline bumps up a year. The kids get taller and discover sex, drugs and heartbreak. The adults get sadder and wiser. Everyone does the best they can. Linklater's gambit would be a gimmick if it weren't executed with such emotion and artistry, but this is far more than a gimmick. It feels like a benchmark in film history.
