Austin foursome Boy brands itself a "glam-psych" band, making thorough use of Bowie and Queen touchstones. But more than it suggests '70s icons, Boy sounds a bit like its nominal opposite: Girls. And for Boy, sounding a bit like Girls—a critically acclaimed and popular Bay Area indie band—is certainly no bad thing. It's a savvy business move, at worst; at best, Boy's culling of Girls' wavering vocal style and retro-familiar pop arrangements, most notably on "White Tiger," is just one of many points-of-reference in the band's promising pop. —Bryan C.
