Boulevards, Kooley High, Lonnie Walker, Zensofly

When: Sat., Jan. 20, 9 p.m. 2018
Price: $15

Boulevards, the hard-driving project led by Raleigh's Jamil Rashad, snuck in under the radar with a new record, Hurtown, USA. The self-released LP makes for a strong follow-up to 2016's electrifying Groove!, full of the same throwbacks to slick funk and R&B from the eighties and nineties. Rashad has a gift for crafting hooks that stick with you immediately, as though he's worked with a team of Top 40 mad scientists to develop tunes that are scientifically engineered to get you to dance. But Hurtown, USA isn't all anthems for a good time—amid all the funk and shine, Rashad digs deep into themes of heartbreak for songs that sting even as they swing. Even so, show up ready to sweat. The esteemed Raleigh rap crew Kooley High opens, as do the rock band Lonnie Walker and the fiery young emcee ZenSoFly. —Allison Hussey
