Born Ruffians, Young Rival (Back Room)

When: Wed., Nov. 4, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $10-$12
Even coming up at a particularly yelp-loving mid-’00s moment in indie rock, Born Ruffians’ singer Luke LaLonde out-yelped ’em all. He made Wolf Parade’s Spencer Krug sound like Leonard Cohen, post-nap. The youthful excitability of the Toronto band’s 2008 debut, Red Yellow & Blue, caused the shambles of the follow-up, Say It, to seem extra disappointing. Born Ruffians have been crawling back to a pop sound since, both on 2013’s smoothed out Birthmarks and this year’s Ruff. The new one suggests a slightly more caffeinated Vampire Weekend. —Jeff Klingman
