About a decade ago, the albums of the Japanese psych-metal-drone-thrash trio Boris began a steady American infiltration, seeping from the underground toward the collective awareness of the indie rock set. For many, they helped reshape post-millennial perceptions of exactly what metal might be. The ever-adaptable Boris could collaborate with harsh noise legend Merzbow or brood at length with Sunn O))), threaten speaker systems with their masterful Amplifier Worship or rise into rainbow bliss on their Pink. For better and worse, they've continued to churn out broad and exploratory albums, the stuff of perennial seekers as fascinated by pop-rock as they are hellish squall. The recent Noise is a concise statement of these enthusiasms and one of their most propulsive, open-eyed trips in years.

Boris helped open inroads for bands such as the two they've selected as new tourmates, Chicago's The Atlas Moth and Salt Lake City's SubRosa. Both groups start down familiar metal paths before heading wildly off-road. Atlas Moth spins through grand, Deftones-sized hooks and then sprints into black metal, while SubRosa buttresses a mix of Breeders-like rock and arching doom with an army of violins and guitars. —Grayson Haver Currin
