Boom Unit Brass Band

When: Fri., Dec. 29, 8:30 p.m. 2017

Regardless of your musical tastes, there's nothing quite as affecting as a big brass band. Done correctly, a brass band can wield a power that dwarfs that of Thor's hammer, with a range of tones and timbres that shine as brightly as the instruments themselves. Chapel Hill's Boom Unit Brass Band trades in exactly this sort of stuff. But beyond traditional, New Orleans-style second line jams, the ensemble also offers rousing covers that range from rock numbers like Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name" and Weezer's "Say It Ain't So" to pop hits like Bruno Mars's "Uptown Funk." They're likely to blow the roof off Durham's little Bullpen, but if you need some extra invigoration to push you over 2017's finish line, they'll do the trick. Prepare to party. —Allison Hussey
