Bobby Bare Jr, Blue Giant

When: Wed., Sept. 22, 9:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $8-10

Bobby Bare Jr. is a Pixies-and-Smiths-loving, Shel Silverstein-influenced Nashville iconoclast. His second high-profile gig—his first was at age 6, singing "Daddy, What If" with his country star pops—was as leader of Bare Jr. When that outfit stopped approximating the sound of Grand Funk Railroad playing on your back porch, he began making ingeniously quirky records full of music that's Southern and that rocks without being Southern rock. His latest release, A Storm A Tree My Mother's Head, continues along less-followed paths, loudly and smartly. Portland's Blue Giant opens and then serves as backing band.—Rick Cornell
