Blues at the Crossroads: The Robert Johnson Centennial Concert

When: Wed., Feb. 16, 7:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $10-55

Sadly, the big draw, 95-year old Robert Johnson protégé David "Honeyboy" Edwards, has cancelled. But this show still boasts a fine lineup to honor Johnson's influence. Big Head Todd & the Monsters aren't blues per se, mining a rootsy, jam-inflected corner of the alt-rock universe. While their mainstream appeal lures more casual blues enthusiasts, purists will appreciate former Howlin' Wolf sideman Hubert Sumlin. His aggressive style features unpredictable solos that squawk as often as they slither, alternating between deliberate grooves and explosive flurries. Edwards' replacement, John Mooney, mixes Delta blues grime with Big Easy swing. Tickets to the 7:30 p.m. show are $20–$55, or $10 for UNC students. —Chris Parker
