Woody Allen is at the top of his game in this film about a Park Avenue socialite (Cate Blanchett) who loses everything when her husband (Alec Baldwin) is busted for a Madoff-like scheme, then moves to San Francisco to crash with her sister (Sally Hawkins) and start over. The film strikes a poignant tone, handling tragic elements and comedic touches in a way that feels like real life while simultaneously delivering a parody of Manhattan wealth run amok. The pace never feels rushed, and Allen does a lot of things as well as he's ever done them, in addition to some things he's never done before.
