Drama

Grizzled old E.F.Bloodworth (grizzled old Kris Kristofferson) returns to his Tennessee home of sorry no 'counts. Since he lit out 40 years ago, his three disgusting sons have been seething with resentment, and only Fleming, his grandson (played with wary charm by Reece Daniel Thompson), seems to have escaped the family curse of depravity. The acting is effective (especially by a toad-like Val Kilmer and former Disney princess Hilary Duff), as is the finely crafted musical score by T-Bone Burnett and the crisp appreciation of the landscape shot in Wilmington, Ivanhoe and Currie, N.C. by cinematographer Tim Orr, a UNCSA graduate. This languorous character study drags on far too long through the rural muck and mire of blood, moonshine and Oxycontin as it heads toward its predictable conclusion. Why anyone should care about this Tobacco Road-ish tale of perversity and redemption remains a mystery.
