Blood Red River, Virgo 9, Fujiyama Roll

When: Sat., June 11, 10 p.m. 2011
Price: $5

With a grimy, overcharged '60s rumble that recalls Dead Moon, chunky garage-punks Virgo 9 (from Charleston, W.Va.) are the evening's highlight. Classically trained singer-guitarist Teresa McGlothlin boasts a soulful, howling vocal style somewhere between Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Janis Joplin, keying the trio's swaggering presence. Durham quartet Fujiyama Roll, headlining here, is comprised of Japanese expats; they walk the line between prickly pop, classic rock and '70s prog, inspired by traditional J-pop and J-rock. Frontwoman BJ Junko's vocals range acrobatically from squealing highs to gruff muscularity. Durham instrumental surfabilly enthusiasts Blood Red River open. —Chris Parker
