In this one-man show, the amazing Mike Wiley plays more than 20 characters, taking on Tim Tyson's award-winning account of a racially motivated hate crime in Oxford, N.C. In the summer of 1970, the brutal murder of 23-year-old Henry "Dickie" Marrow—for the unpardonable offense of allegedly flirting with a white woman—shocked the consciences of people throughout the state. On the day of his funeral, mourners marched on the town's Confederate monument. In the following weeks, Klan activity increased in the region, and an arson campaign aimed at white-owned businesses caused more than $1 million in property damage. Then an all-white jury acquitted the two white men charged in the murder, for which no one was ever found guilty. In Wiley's adaptation, people on all sides of this tragedy, including acquitted suspect Robert Teel, bear witness to a fundamental breach of justice and its aftermath. The testimony is compelling, especially rendered through Wiley's abilities as an actor and mimic. Through June 8. —Byron Woods
