BLACK PEARL SINGS

FRIDAY, FEB. 6–SUNDAY, FEB. 22, RALEIGH

THEATRE IN THE PARK—Alan Lomax wasn't out there all by himself. A band of music historians (including novelist Zora Neale Hurston) sought out back-road juke joints and churches across the South in the 1930s, in search of authentic African-American slave songs, spirituals and blues. In Black Pearl Sings, a maverick musicologist meets her match in a Texas prison: an equally obstinate folk singer named Alberta "Pearl" Johnson. Pearl won't sing until she gets her price: a deal involving something greater than her own freedom. Rozlyn Sorrell's haunting, unaccompanied voice sold us on last year's production at Temple Theatre; she reunites with Lynda Clark in this revival. 7:30 p.m. Thurs.–Sat.; 3 p.m. Sun., $22–$28, 107 Pullen Rd., Raleigh, 919-831-6058, www.theatreinthepark.com. —Byron Woods
