Black Irish: Lit

When: Sat., Jan. 20, 7 p.m. and Sun., Jan. 21, 4 p.m. 2018
Price: $10-$20

No one else in regional dance is doing what choreographer-designer Ronald West is doing. His fusion of razor-sharp hip-hop moves, contemporary techniques, experimental costume and technical design, and dance-club beats with catwalk sensibilities have depicted improbable intersections in recent years: Gown and Pro-ject evoke Gaga choreography, the LGBTQ ballroom community of New York City, and German tanztheater, as dancers peel through layers of functional and dysfunctional relationships. In his new Black Irish work, Lit, West explores the physical and psychological possibilities of the most euphoric buzzword of 2017. Since "lit" means being shown in light as well as intoxicated, take a moment to let your eyes adjust to the disorienting glare when the doors of perception first burst open. Then watch as the light-bulb moments really start happening. The evening opens with an encore performance of last year's Shade. —Byron Woods
