Black Girls

When: Wed., Jan. 4, 10 p.m. 2012

Unrelated to the classic local early-'90s troupe, this Richmond quintet has a breezy, ramshackle gait and a swooning soulful cabaret shimmy, a little like the Walkmen if they indulged their inner Roxy Music. Frontman Drew Gillihan brings a strut to his blue-eyed croon as it rides the Hammond and spindly but double-jointed slashes of funky guitar. The frequently dreamy textures imbue an encased-in-amber vibe, forging a subtle tension with R&B-inflected rhythms. They released their self-titled debut last year. The 10 p.m. show is free; see —Chris Parker
