Birds of Avalon, Tonk, The Lollipops

When: Fri., Aug. 23, 9:30 p.m. 2013
In its first iteration, on Raleigh's busy thoroughfare of McDowell Street, Kings Barcade was a scrappy and strangely shaped room, with odd angles and low ceilings and seemingly hidden hallways. Kings is different now, situated in the well-designed top floor of a three-story cultural center that also includes a multi-ethnic restaurant and a subterranean bar. It's a proper rock club with a big sound rig and major touring gigs.

But the club's quirky, community-oriented dynamic hasn't changed that much. They still host wonky live-action game shows, charity events and loads of local bands looking for a fan base. They throw wonderfully strange parties, too, like this one: Rather than bring in famous friends for the venue's three-year anniversary, they asked Terry Anderson and his Olympic Ass Kickin' Team to play the songs of the Electric Light Orchestra, reprising a set they delivered during Kings' popular Great Cover-Up series. The Triangle's soft rock elder statesmen, The Wusses, join Anderson on Saturday night.

Friday's show is a distinctly family affair, headlined by Birds of Avalon, the two-guitar powerhouse that includes club owners Cheetie Kumar and Paul Siler. Tonk, the country troupe of co-owner Ben Barwick, opens, while The Lollipops—a blustery and sometimes brilliant Raleigh pop band—features several of the club's bartenders, DJs and regulars. —Grayson Currin
