Birds of Avalon, Free Electric State, Savage Knights

When: Fri., Aug. 19, 9:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $5

Birds of Avalon have always been at their best when they bridge the gap between huge, hooky rock and warped psychedelia. This year's self-titled third LP, and the band's latest four-piece incarnation, play consistently in that sweet spot, which means now might be the best time to see them. Durham's Free Electric State hasn't cut a full-length reply to last year's Caress yet, but that album's wall-of-guitars attack, moody melodies and deliberate rhythm only sounds better and bigger live. It's worth arriving early to watch Savage Knights run a skewer through art rock and jazz, incorporating the former's jagged energy and the latter's exploratory intrigue. —Bryan C. Reed
