Birds of Avalon, Bright Young Things, Acid Chaperone

When: Sun., Nov. 1, 8:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $7

With Halloween arriving on a Saturday, there's a fair chance you may feel groggy come Sunday, whether by way of exhaustion from leading your kids around the neighborhood, doling out pumpkins full of candy at your front door or through sheer sugar ingestion courtesy of alcohol and sweet treats. This three-band bill—labeled as a Dia de los Muertos show but seemingly having little to do with the dead except the shared day—actually caters well to a fuzzy mind. Opening quartet Acid Chaperone are a hulking, righteous psychedelic mess, gradually carving roars of distortion and dysrhythmia into anthems. Few bands anywhere do that better than Birds of Avalon, the Raleigh troupe whose early rock 'n' roll ambitions have steadily yielded to a desire to wield weirdness inside numbers with hooks that catch automatically. Now supported by two drummers, the band's able to drive them deeper than ever before. In the bill's middle, Bright Young Things—a crisp pop-rock set, resurging now after years of inactivity—provide a moment of clarity. 8:30 p.m., $7, 14 W. Martin St., Raleigh, 919-833-1091, —Grayson Haver Currin
