A few weeks ago, Billy Sugarfix smashed his finger in a freight elevator, but that's not going to stop this merry prankster and his five-piece chamber pop ensemble, The Carousel. "It's healing up pretty nicely," he says, adding, "I'm just very glad that I have these guys playing with me. They can take up spaces I leave." These guys are Impossible Arms' Justin Blatt, the Triangle Sound Painting Orchestra's Doug Vuncannon, Felix Obelix's Wendy Spitzer and Sara Zaleta. With viola, double bass, oboe, guitar and vocals, the band generates lush orchestrations with simple strokes.

"It's actually one of the most fun situations I've been in," says Sugarfix, who credits that in part to the acoustic nature of their practice. "There's no cable that I have to be connected to. I don't have to sing into a mic, and, best of all, I don't have to wear earplugs. It just adds a whole new dimension to rehearsals. It's extremely fulfilling." Amplifying that and taking it to Duke Gardens by storm means a whole different experience for The Carousel, and Sugarfix admits he's "kind of intimidated." Knowing Sugarfix, though, that's just fuel for the fire. —Ashley Melzer
