Billy Strings, Whiskey Shivers

When: Thu., Sept. 14, 6-9 p.m. 2017
Price: free

Flatpicked acoustic guitar is one of the main pillars of bluegrass. Not only does the instrument help fill in rhythmic passages in percussion-free ensembles, but the detailed timbre of speed-of-light picking is a defining quality of the genre. Billy Strings, a twenty-five-year-old from Nashville, is one of the most skilled young pickers in bluegrass today, which he demonstrates at full tilt on his forthcoming debut record, Turmoil & Tinfoil. His guitar chops are front and center, but his classic and confident baritone voice is remarkably powerful, too. Strings isn't a complete purist; he sneaks in some jam influences on tracks like the ten-minute "Meet Me at the Creek"—but he pulls back just enough to keep from becoming watered-down jamgrass. Instead, Strings melds the past and present into one blistering sound of his own. You'll have to see him in person to believe how fast his fingers can move. Whiskey Shivers open. —Allison Hussey
