Billy Joe Shaver, the original Honky Tonk Hero

Billy Joe Shaver

When: Mon., June 17, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $22-25

Willie Nelson called him the greatest living country songwriter, and he might be the most underappreciated. Besides penning 90 percent of Waylon's breakthrough album Honky Tonk Heroes, Shaver authored songs others rode to success, including "Live Forever," "Old Chunk of Coal" and "Georgia On a Fast Train." Plenty of hidden gold remains in that catalog, and Shaver's still adding to it. "The Git Go," a new track off last year's Live at Billy Bob's Texas, showcases his gift for stark, direct lyricism in narrating man's eternal duplicity, greed and belligerence: "It's the same old lesson they never learn, too busy working on their next turn." —Chris Parker
