BILL T. JONES/ARNIE ZANE DANCE COMPANY

DURHAM PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, DURHAM

FRIDAY, JULY 10–SATURDAY, JULY 11

Dora Amelan lived—and still lives, at age 95. It's improbable enough a fate for a Belgian Jew who found herself a refugee during the Nazi occupation of France. She worked as a nurse with a children's relief organization, aided the Jewish underground and the resistance, and lived to tell the tale. The improbabilities continue from there. One of her two sons, Bjorn, wound up working for choreographer Bill T. Jones, first as a set designer, then creative director. The pair have now been partners for more than 20 years. "She adopted me as her third son," Jones told an audience at Bard College in May. Analogy/Dora: Tramontane is based on oral histories, collected by Jones, of Dora Amelan's experiences during the war years and the ethical dilemmas of working with a group that sometimes had to sacrifice adults to save children. It's also based on the stories of Amelan's sister, one year younger, who made radically different decisions during that time. 8 p.m. Fri.; 7 p.m. Sat., 123 Vivian St., Durham, $19.25–$58, 919-680-2787, www.americandancefestival.org. —Byron Woods
