Critically acclaimed band is underappreciated in its time, then becomes legendary as a primal influence on legions of artists in its wake: Big Star's story isn't unique in American music, but it makes for a compelling if often heartbreaking documentary. The car-crash death in 1978 of troubled co-founder Chris Bell (who had left the band after its 1972 debut album) infuses the band's star-crossed music-industry tale with heavy personal tragedy. As the band dissolves in the mid-'70s, N.C. musicians Chris Stamey and Mitch Easter become intertwined in the next phase. Against all odds, Big Star returns in the '90s, adding Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow from The Posies. Chilton's 2010 death from a heart attack might have been the end note, but for Stamey's dedication to keeping Big Star's music alive with star-studded tribute performances. Check the Artery blog for an interview with director Drew DeNicola.
