As hip-hop gets more insular and workaday, the influence of former Durham institution Little Brother has only grown. As with The Roots, Little Brother's insider-outsider spirit kicked the doors down for many ambitious kids, with Rapper Big Pooh standing as the stalwart spitter who kept the restless trio's feet on the ground. He dutifully rode 9th Wonder's gulping beats and countered Phonte Coleman's more lofty verses with cipher-raised rhymes. As a solo artist, Big Pooh maintains his worker-bee reputation, though he's become more open-eared. His 2009 album, Delightful Bars, featured "Power," a vicious industry indictment above a freaky video game-sounding production from Khrysis. And his modest vision of boom-bap keeps on keeping on, particularly with his Fat Boy Fresh series of mixtapes. Plenty of people have stolen moves from Little Brother's playbook lately, so why not see one of the authors? —Brandon Soderberg
