From the tiny Appalachian town of Sparta, N.C., Big Daddy Love combines bluegrass and folk influences with a modern Southern rock mindset. To wit, Daniel Justin Smith's frantic acoustic guitar meets the scorching leads and soaring slides of Joseph Recchio's Stratocaster, while Brian Swenk's Scruggs-style banjo rolls over the rock-solid rhythms provided by Ashley Sutton's electric bass and Brian Horton's drum kit. The quintet's upbeat tunes crackle with energy suited more for live performance than spins from a studio album, though Smith's lyrics bear the kind of down-home charm that roots fans will appreciate in either setting. The band plays two sets with no opener; there's a $7 cover for the 9 p.m. show. —Spencer Griffith
