BETTYE LAVETTE

BALDWIN AUDITORIUM, DURHAM

SATURDAY, SEPT. 19

Detroit soul slinger Bettye LaVette started cutting classic tunes in the '60s, when she was still a teenager. Despite brushes with success, though, she remained a cult heroine for decades, known primarily to crate diggers and hardcore soul heads. She kicked off her comeback and overdue breakthrough with an attention-getting 2003 album, but it was the 2005 Anti Records follow-up, I've Got My Own Hell to Raise, that really raised LaVette's profile. Producer Joe Henry did for her what he'd done three years earlier for Solomon Burke—letting a gifted R&B vet work some soul magic on a batch of tunes by pop-rock legends. LaVette has since established herself as one of America's most powerful interpreters of song. Her gritty but dynamic voice and her knack for wringing drama from every phrase are stunning, especially live. Her latest album, Worthy, pairs her with Henry again to cover cuts by the likes of Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, as well as less ubiquitous names like Mickey Newbury. No matter what's on her set list for the evening, when Bettye sings a song, it stays sung. 8 p.m., $10$42, 1336 Campus Drive, Durham, 919-684-4444, www.dukeperformances.duke.edu. —Jim Allen
