Better than Something

When: Thu., June 28, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $5

Jimmy Lee Lindsay Jr., better known to the world as Jay Reatard, died in January 2010. At 29, he skipped the infamous Forever 27 Club populated by the likes of Cobain, Hendrix, Joplin and Morrison, but to some, Reatard's name is as hallowed. Even if he never captured the mainstream, by the end of his life, Reatard's handle graced at least one perfect album (2006's Blood Visions) and a singularly captivating, anxiety-ridden mix of new-wave, lo-fi pop and punk. Better than Something is a loving tribute from filmmakers Alex Hammond and Ian Markiewicz, casting Reatard as the rock idol he might have been. The 9 p.m. screening costs $5. —Bryan C. Reed
