Though she first got noticed in the dubby psych project Pocahaunted, Bethany Cosentino’s had much more success making likeable, unchallenging rock about boys, cats, weed and sunshine. Formed in 2009, Best Coast fit in well with the lo-fi garage rock wave at the tail-end of the 2000s. But Best Coasts’s songs have always focused on delivering simple pleasures rather than obscuring them with fuzz. Cosentino’s declarative hooks connected to a broad audience that cult bands like Vivian Girls or Crystal Stilts could never reach. While 2012’s The Only Place veered toward Neko Case-like alt-country, this year’s California Nights is amped up on alt-rock crunch. Best Coast is an indie-pop post card, not too deep but pleasant enough when they show up. —Jeff Klingman
