@betsub:t-6>In pilgrims

@bettxt:t-6>Former I>Carolina Quarterly$> editor B>Robert Rubin$> comes to Quail Ridge Books on June 26 at 7:30 p.m., to discuss his book I>On the Beaten Path: An Appalachian Pilgrimage$>. Rubin did what many of us long to accomplish\m>he quit his day job and set off on an adventure, choosing to walk the world's longest continuously marked footpath, the Appalachian Trail. And, unlike nine of 10 ambitious "AT" hikers, Rubin actually made it all the way to the journey's end at Maine's Mount Katahdin. (The book's front flap shows the author on Day One, slightly overweight and humped under a huge red pack; by the back flap's Day 194 photograph, Rubin has bloody shins and a big grin as he squints up into the sunlight, packless and free.) In an interesting twist, Rubin's visit to Quail Ridge on Monday night will be followed on Tuesday with an appearance by B>Bill Bryson$>, Rubin's best-selling predecessor in Appalachian Trail sagas. Bryson will be reading from his new book, the Australia-inspired I>In a Sunburned Country$>, at 7:30 p.m. For more information, call 828-1588.
