Bernard Harris

When: Thu., Dec. 29, 8 p.m. 2011

For bass players, it's a frustrating reality that their instrument is widely considered ill-equipped to carry a melody. Its lumbering tones are too thick to sound precise—with some glorious exceptions, of course—so tuneful passages often end up a muddled mess. Though he plays in the frustratingly bland middle ground between slow jazz and soft funk, piccolo bassist Bernard Harris manages to conjure thrills by understanding his instrument. His rhythmic passages reveal themselves in effortless tumbles, and his solos are even more impressive. Keeping the beat at the fore, he makes catchy lines sound right at home on his heavy strings. The show starts at 8 p.m.; visit for admission price. —Jordan Lawrence
