“Girls Love Shoes,” from soul-funk-pop enigma Benji Hughes, is mighty confusing for something so simplistic. It’s got a thudding beat and vocals by Meshell Ndegeocello, and the chorus simply goes “Girls love shoes.” But the whole dumb premise exists in a weird gray area of maybe being sexist, or maybe just being a poorly executed joke. Is this dude for real? Maybe you can ask him at Merge Records’ free party with New Belgium. —Allison Hussey
